सर्दियों का सीजन शुरू होते ही कांगड़ा जिले की पौंग डैम झील प्रवासी पक्षियों से गुलजार होने शुरू हो जाती है। हजारों की संख्या में पहुंचने वाले कई प्रजातियों के जलचर पक्षियों की अठखेलियों से समूची झील आकर्षण का केंद्र बन जाती है। जिसको मद्देनजर रखते हुये वन्य प्राणी विभाग भी हर साल मुस्तैद हो जाता है और यहां पर आने वाले सैलानियों से भी इन रंग-बिरंगे पक्षियों के दीदार के लिए पैसे वसूल करता है। मगर इस बार वन्य प्राणी विभाग के सामने बहुत बड़ी चुनौती खड़ी हो गई है, दरअसल यहां इन प्रवासी पक्षियों की अचानक से मौत होने शुरू हो गई है। महज कुछ ही दिनों में साढ़े चार सौ से भी ज्यादा पक्षी काल के गाल में समा गये हैं तो कुछ को तड़प-तड़प कर मरता हुआ भी पाया गया है। पक्षियों की यूं अचानक से हो रही मौत सभी के लिए असमंजस का कारण बन चुकी है। असंख्य जलचर पक्षियों की अचानक से हुई मौत को मद्देनजर रखते हुये विभाग भी सकते में आ गया है और आकलन ये किया जाने लगा है कि कहीं पौंग डैम के किनारे बीजी गई गेहूं में डाली गई कीटनाशक दवाइयों ही इन पक्षियों के लिए जानलेवा तो साबित नहीं हो रही। हालांकि विभाग अभी किसी ठोस नतीजे पर तो नहीं पहुंचा मगर इस एंगल से भी ज़रूर देखा जा रहा है, फिलहाल विभाग की ओर से मृत पक्षियों का बिसरा और लेकर लैब में भेजा गया है साथ ही बिसरा रिपोर्ट आने के बाद ही इस बात का खुलासा हो पायेगा कि असल में इन पक्षियों के अचानक से मरने की वजह क्या हो सकती है। प्रवासी पक्षियों की लगातार होती मौते को देखते हुये वन्य प्राणी विभाग हमीरपुर से खुद डीएफओ वाइल्ड लाइफ राहुलएम रोहाणी ने टीम के साथ मौका ए वारदात पर पहुंचकर मौका मुआयना भी किया और मृत पक्षियों के सैंपल भी कलेक्ट किये हैं। उन्होंने इस बाबत अपनी प्रतिक्रिया जाहिर करते हुये कहा कि हो सकता है कि प्रवासी पक्षियों द्वारा डैम किनारे बीजी गई फसल को नुकसान पहुंचाया जा रहा हो जिसको देखते हुए किसानों ने इसमें कीटनाशक दवाइयों का छिड़काव कर दिया हो जिसकी वजह से इनकी मौत हो रही हो, लेकिन फिलहाल इस बारे में कोई ठोस प्रतिक्रिया जाहिर नहीं की जा सकती। वहीं वन्य प्राणी विभाग की मुख्य अरण्यपाल उपासना सिंह की मानें तो उन्होंने इस पूरे मामले को अपने उच्च अधिकारियों के समक्ष भी उठाया है साथ ही इस मसले की गंभीरता को मद्देनजर रखते हुये जिलाधीश राकेश प्रजापति ने भी दिशा निर्देश जारी किये हैं साथ ही अब पौंग डैम के किनारे होने वाली पर्यटन गतिबिधियों को भी 31 दिसम्बर से तत्काल प्रभाव से रोक दिया गया है और 10 किलोमीटर के दायरे में कोई भी पर्यटन एक्टिविटी नहीं हो पा रही। उपासना सिंह ने बताया कि मरे हुये पक्षियों को देखते हुये किसी बीमारी से भी इंकार नहीं किया जा सकता इसलिये उन्हें तुरन्त वहां से हटाया गया है ताकि अगर ये बीमारी हुई तो पॉल्ट्री और जानवरों में न फैल सके।
