शिमला स्थित इंडियन इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ एडवांस स्टडीज एक ऐतिहासिक भवन है जहां शिमला समझौता हुआ था। निर्माण शैली के साथ अपनी ऐतिहासिकता के लिए यह भवन दुनिया भर में विख्यात है।


इस संस्थान का भवन वर्ष 1884 में तत्कालीन वायसराय लॉर्ड डफरिन के लिए बनाया गया था। इसे वाइसरीगल लॉज कहा जाता था।
इसके बाद 1888 में यहां के लिए बिजली की व्यवस्था की गई। शिमला में शायद यह पहला भवन था जहां बिजली की व्यवस्था थी। बाद में शिमला आए बाकी वायसराय भी इसी भवन में ठहरा करते थे।


आजादी की लड़ाई के समय इस संस्थान के भवन में कई ऐतिहासिक बैठकें हुई और फैसले लिए गए। पाकिस्तान के साथ 1945 में हुआ शिमला समझौता इसी भवन में हुआ था।
पाकिस्तान और पूर्वी पाकिस्तान को देश से अलग करने का फैसला यहीं लिया गया। देश को आजादी मिलने के बाद इस भवन को राष्ट्रपति निवास का नाम दिया गया। गर्मियों के दिनों में राष्ट्रपति यहां समय बिताने आते थे।


बाद में राष्ट्रपति एस राधाकृष्णन ने इस भवन को उच्च शिक्षा और शोध संस्थान बनाने का फैसला लिया। इसके कारण राष्ट्रपति निवास को यहां से बदलकर छराबड़ा स्थित रिट्रील के लिए शिफ्ट किया गया।
इस संस्थान में आज भी विभिन्न राज्यों से दर्जनों शोधकर्ता रिसर्च के लिए पहुंचते हैं। जल संरक्षण सिस्टम के लिए भी यह संस्थान विख्यात है।


अंग्रेजों ने इस भवन का निर्माण इस तरह से करवाया है कि बारिश का सारा पानी भवन के नीचे बने एक टैंक में चला जाता है।
