एक समय की बात है। सिक्किम के राजा ने राज्य का पशु कौन होगा, इस हेतु विशेष एलान किया। सारे पशुओं को बुलाया गया। पांडा परिवार के नेता मिस्टर पांडीज्यान को मंगन जंगल से गंगटोक बुलाया गया। अंततः मिस्टर पांडीज्यान का परिवार ही सिक्किम का राज्य पशु चुना गया।

पांडा बहुत खुश हुआ कि अब उसकी जिंदगी विलासिता से बगीचे में बीतेगी। उसे अच्छा खाना आदि मिलेगा, लेकिन पांडा अपने मित्रों को भूल गया। क्योंकि वह अब राज्य पशु था। उसे बगीचे से सिक्किम के राजा के चिड़ियाघर यानी जू में लाया गया। उसने सोचा कि यहाँ पर ढेर सारी मौज-मस्ती होगी, लेकिन जू में जाने पर पता चला कि यहाँ पर देखभाल के लिए सही लोग नहीं थे। जू में ढेर सारे पांडा पिंजड़े में बंद थे। वे स्वतंत्रतापूर्वक इधर-उधर घूम भी नहीं सकते थे। पांडा अपने परिवार और मित्रों के बारे में सोचने लगा। उसे उस जंगल की याद आने लगी जहाँ वह स्वतंत्रतापूर्वक विचरण करता था, मौज-मस्ती करता था। सोच-सोचकर वह दुखी हो गया।

एक रात पांडीज्यान पर एक चीते ने हमला कर उसे मौत के मुँह तक पहुँचा दिया, लेकिन उसे मित्रों ने बचा लिया और उसे पिंजड़े से भागने में भी मदद की। पांडीज्यान भागकर अपने घर मंगन के जंगल में पहुँच गया। उसने महसूस किया कि बड़े बन जाने पर परिवार, संबंधियों और मित्रों को नहीं भूलना चाहिए। अब जंगल में वह, पिंजड़े से मुक्त होकर, अपनों के बीच आराम से घूम-फिर रहा है और यहाँ किसी प्रकार का खतरा भी नहीं है।
